R.E.

At Wolsey House Primary School, Religious Education (RE) is a valued and essential part of our curriculum. We follow the Leicestershire Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education (2024–2025), a statutory requirement for all local authority schools. Our approach to RE promotes curiosity, respect, critical thinking and an understanding of the diverse religious and non-religious worldviews that shape our local, national and global communities. RE at Wolsey House is not about promoting any particular faith; instead, it is focused on enquiry, exploration and developing pupils’ ability to engage thoughtfully with theological, philosophical and human/social questions.

The RE curriculum at Wolsey House is centred on asking and answering theological and philosophical questions. Lessons are structured to encourage children to think deeply, challenge assumptions and explore meaning and belief through a range of enquiry types, such as:

  • Theological Enquiry – What do different religions teach? How do sacred texts shape belief and practice?
  • Philosophical Enquiry – What does it mean to live a good life? What is truth? How do we know what is right?
  • Human/Social Enquiry – How do religious communities express their beliefs? How do beliefs influence the way people live?

Teachers guide pupils in developing their questioning skills and support them in investigating different viewpoints through discussion, evidence, reflection and research. RE is taught weekly in all year groups, with content mapped according to the Leicestershire Agreed Syllabus and adapted to ensure progression in depth, vocabulary, concepts and questioning skills. Teachers assess through written work, pupil voice, discussions, creative tasks, presentations and enquiry outcomes.

Through our RE curriculum we aim for all pupils to:

  • Gain knowledge and understanding of a range of religions and worldviews.
  • Explore key theological concepts and reflect on what different faiths teach about fundamental questions of life.
  • Develop the ability to ask and answer philosophical and ethical questions, promoting reasoning, curiosity and open-mindedness.
  • Reflect on their own beliefs, values, and experiences.
  • Build respect, tolerance, and appreciation for different ways of life and belief systems.

We teach Christianity and a range of world religions as set out in the Leicestershire Agreed Syllabus. Pupils also learn about non-religious worldviews such as Humanism. Our curriculum ensures there is a balanced coverage, progression of knowledge and concepts in each religion studied, an inclusion of lived experiences from diverse communities and age-appropriate exploration of sensitive or complex beliefs.

Meaningful experiences beyond the classroom are a core part of the RE curriculum at Wolsey House. Every year group participates in a visit to a place of worship—either in person or virtually—each academic year. These visits are carefully planned to align with curriculum content and enhance understanding of belief and practice.
