Reading

Reading at Wolsey House Primary School is taught through a structured approach that combines phonics, guided reading, shared reading, modelled reading, and independent reading.

In the EYFS and Key Stage 1, early reading is taught systematically using the Anne Smallberger ALS Phonics Approach. Pupils are supported to decode words accurately through daily phonics sessions, blending sounds for reading and segmenting for spelling. Reading books are closely matched to pupils’ phonics knowledge, allowing them to experience success and build confidence. Shared and modelled reading activities are used to demonstrate comprehension, vocabulary, fluency and expression. Pupils are encouraged to engage with a wide variety of texts, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry and rhyme.

In Key Stage 2, reading teaching focuses on developing fluency, stamina and comprehension. Pupils are taught to retrieve information, infer meaning, explain ideas, summarise texts, and evaluate language and structure. Guided reading sessions are used to develop comprehension strategies and discussion skills. High-quality texts are selected to engage pupils and broaden their understanding of different genres, authors and perspectives. Reading for pleasure is actively promoted through book talk, class reading sessions and access to a wide range of library resources.

Across both key stages, teachers model fluent, expressive reading and create a culture in which reading is valued. Oracy skills are embedded in reading lessons through discussion, prediction, explanation and reasoning. Pupils are encouraged to read widely, both at school and at home, and to develop habits that support lifelong reading.
