SEND and Inclusion At Wolsey House Primary School

There is a lot of information about SEND and Inclusion at Wolsey House on this page. Please scroll down to the end of the page where you will find our policies. You will also find information about local services and the Leicester City Local Offer.

At Wolsey House Primary School, we are proud of being an inclusive school. We ensure that our curriculum complies with our duty to fulfil The Equality Act 2010 and The Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014 to ensure that our curriculum is accessible for those with disabilities and special educational needs.

We aim to ensure that teachers and support staff feel empowered to confidently adapt the curriculum and differentiate to meet the needs of all learners. Through regular and up-to-date training, we ensure that staff are equipped with the skills and knowledge about how best to support children with a range of special educational needs and disabilities.

We value the voices of parents and carers and operate an open-door policy to enable a shared and collaborative approach to support every pupil's individual learning journey. We work in partnership with relevant external agencies to ensure that the right support can be given to those pupils requiring more targeted or specialist adaptations to our provision and curriculum.

The school’s special educational needs and disability coordinators (SENDCos) are:

EVERY TEACHER IS A TEACHER OF SEND

Statement of Intent for Supporting Equality

The staff and governors at Wolsey House Primary School adopt a whole school approach to special needs provision. Our ethos is one of collaboration between senior leadership, teachers, support staff, parents, agencies and most importantly the child.

Through a flexible approach to learning, valuing all the child’s achievements and allowing for individual differences we aim to develop children’s strengths, address their needs and make school an enjoyable, happy and productive time for each child.

Our overall aim is to help all children reach their full potential in a caring and co-operative atmosphere where each child feels respected and valued.

At Wolsey House Primary School we strive to ensure that all children experience a broad and balanced curriculum which is differentiated to enable children to:

  • understand the relevance and purpose of learning
  • experience levels of understanding and rates of progress which bring success and raise self-esteem
  • provide a secure and safe environment, where children can flourish and grow
  • have equal access to resources, provision and intervention

At Wolsey House Primary School we recognise that all pupils are entitled to a quality of provision that will enable them to achieve their potential. We believe in positive intervention, removing barriers to learning, raising expectations and levels of achievement and working in partnership with other agencies in order to provide a positive educational experience for all our pupils including those with a special educational need or disability.

Our school recognises there are particular groups of pupils whose circumstances require additional consideration by those who work with them to support their SEND.

At Wolsey House Primary School we have appointed a Designated Teacher for Looked after Children (Mrs Cooper-Marsh – SENDCO) to ensure all teachers, teaching assistants and admin staff understand the implications for those children who are looked after and have SEND.

At Wolsey House Primary School we ensure that all pupils, regardless of their specific needs make the best possible progress.

There are four broad areas of SEND. These are:

Communication and Interaction

This area of need includes children with Autism Spectrum Condition and those with Speech, Language and Communication Needs

Cognition and Learning

This includes children with Specific Learning Difficulties, Moderate Learning Difficulties, Severe Learning Difficulties and Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties

Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties

This includes any pupils who have an emotional, social or mental health need that is impacting on their ability to learn

Sensory and/or Physical Difficulties

This area includes children with hearing impairment, visual impairment, multi-sensory impairment and physical difficulties.

At Wolsey House Primary School we are committed to equality. We aim for every pupil to fulfil their potential no matter what their needs. Our School is committed to anti-discriminatory practice to promote equality of opportunity and valuing diversity for all children and families.

We aim to:

  • Provide a secure and accessible environment in which all our children can flourish and in which all contributions are considered and valued.
  • Include and value the contribution of all families to our understanding of equality and diversity.
  • Provide positive non-stereotyping information about gender roles, diverse ethnic and cultural groups and disabled people.
  • Improve our knowledge and understanding of issues of anti-discriminatory practice, promoting equality and valuing diversity.

Wolsey House Primary School prides itself in being very inclusive and will endeavour to support every child regardless of their level of need.  All pupils follow the National Curriculum at a level and a pace that is appropriate to their abilities. At times and when it is felt appropriate, modifications to the curriculum may be implemented. Teaching staff should make effective use of time in class to ensure that all pupils including those with SEND are given the appropriate support and encouragement to learn alongside their peers.

To successfully match pupil ability to the curriculum there are some actions we may take to achieve this:

  • Ensure that all pupils have access to the school curriculum and all school activities
  • Help all pupils achieve to the best of their abilities, despite any difficulty or disability they may have
  • Ensure that teaching staff are aware of and sensitive to the needs of all pupils, teaching pupils in a way that is more appropriate to their needs
  • Pupils to gain in confidence and improve their self-esteem
  • To work in partnership with parents/ carers, pupils and relevant external agencies in order to provide for children’s special educational needs and disabilities
  • To identify at the earliest opportunity, all children that need special consideration to support their needs (whether these are educational, social, physical or emotional)
  • To make suitable provision for children with SEND to fully develop their abilities, interests and aptitudes and gain maximum access to the curriculum
  • Ensure that all children with SEND are fully included in all activities of the school in order to promote the highest levels of achievement
  • To promote self-worth and enthusiasm by encouraging independence at all age and ability levels
  • To give every child the entitlement to a sense of achievement
  • To regularly review the policy and practice in order to achieve best practice

What training have staff who support children with SEND had?

We believe that it is vitally important to ensure that staff working with SEND children have access to excellent CPD and an appropriate training programme. This is essential for fostering an inclusive, supportive learning environment and to keep them informed. We ensure that they have access to an excellent CPD programme which directly benefits the children by enhancing the quality of the support and teaching they receive. This training ensures that staff are better equipped to identify and respond to the specific needs of each child, whether this is in terms of academic support, communication strategies or behavioural interventions. Through regular CPD, staff have gained a deeper understanding of children’s different learning needs, which has enabled them to tailor their approach to meeting these needs. For example, we have ensured that they are kept informed and up-to-date about new techniques to support children with autism, dyslexia, or sensory processing challenges. The impact of this training is that lessons are more accessible and engaging for the children. Children also benefit from a more inclusive, responsive, and personalised learning environment where their specific needs are met, boosting their confidence and motivation to learn. This support not only helps them achieve academically but also impacts positively on the development of their social and emotional skills, promoting greater independence and self-confidence.

Complaints procedure regarding SEND provision

We aim to work, wherever possible, effectively and in partnership with parents and carers to ensure a collaborative approach to meeting their children’s needs. All complaints are taken seriously.

In the first instance complaints about SEND provision should be made to the class teacher, Year Team Leader or SENDCo.  Parents and carers who have concerns or complaints can make an appointment to speak to the class teacher, Year Team Leader or SENDCo, or a combination of these personnel.

If parents and carers believe that an issue has not been resolved, they can make an appointment to discuss it with the headteacher. We would aim and endeavour to resolve the issue but if parents and carers continue to believe that the issue  has not been resolved, they can make a formal complaint to the school's governing body. The school’s Link Governor for SEND is Mrs Bhavini Raikundalia and the Chair of Governors is Mr Matthew Peatfield.

Mrs Raikundalia can be contacted via this email: office@wolseyhouse.leicester.sch.uk

Mr Peatfield can be contacted via this email: mpeatfield1@wolseyhouse.leicester.sch.uk
