Prevent Radicalisation and Extremism by Acting Early

It can be hard to know what to do if you’re worried someone close is expressing extreme views or hatred, which could lead to them harming themselves or others. Working with other organisations, the police protect vulnerable people from being exploited by extremists through a Home Office programme called Prevent.

Act early and tell us your concerns in confidence. You won’t be wasting our time and you won’t ruin lives, but you might save them.

Dear Parents and Carers,

We would like to share a new guide from the Children’s Commissioner for England titled What I wish my parents or carers knew: A guide for parents on managing children’s digital lives.

Supporting children’s safety online is a shared responsibility between families, schools, and wider society. As children’s lives are increasingly shaped by the digital world, many parents and carers face difficult decisions about how to keep children safe while still allowing them to learn, socialise, and play online.

This guide focuses on managing children’s everyday online habits and has been written with direct input from children and young people across England, including those with SEND. It reflects their views on what helps and what doesn’t when parents and carers set boundaries around online use. Many young people shared that they value clear, firm, and informed boundaries and, in hindsight, wish they had been protected from smartphones and online pressures for longer.

We hope this guide will be a helpful resource for you as you navigate conversations and decisions about your child’s digital life. The link to the guide can be found below, and we encourage you to take a look when you have time.
