Religious Education

Intent - our aims

Our RE Curriculum follows the Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE), the local agreed syllabus for Leicester City.

Religious Education in our school aims to help children acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of Christianity and the other principal religions represented in Great Britain; encourage and support children to learn about a range of religions and non-religious worldviews whilst also developing the ability to make reasoned and informed judgements about religious and moral issues and enhance their own spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

We believe that it is important for all our pupils to learn from and about religion, so that they can better understand their own beliefs, our school community and the world around them.

Religious Education is taught throughout the school in such a way as to reflect the overall aims, values, and philosophy of the school, using questions such as Who inspires me?  Why should we care about our world? What are the deeper meanings of celebrations?

We encourage our pupils to ask questions about the world and to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences. We include and promote British values, ensuring that children are aware of their rights and responsibilities as UK citizens.

Our RE curriculum ensures that all pupils are given opportunities to learn about religion and non-religious worldviews in a variety of ways.  Our curriculum is designed to encourage creativity, imagination, enquiry, debate, discussion and independence.

Implementation - how it is taught

At Wolsey House Primary School the following religions have been selected:

  • Christianity
  • Islam
  • Judaism
  • Hinduism
  • Buddhism
  • Sikhism

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

In the Early Years Foundation Stage the learning outcomes are referenced to Christianity and as appropriate to a range of other beliefs and cultures.

Key Stage 1

In KS1 Christianity is studied and one other principal religion in some depth.

Key Stage 2

In KS2 Christianity is studied and two other principal religions in some depth.

We value the religious background of all members of the school community and give the children the opportunity to share their knowledge and experiences with others.  All religions and their communities are treated with respect and sensitivity. We value the strong links that have been established between home, school and faith communities.

We promote teaching in Religious Education that focuses on providing opportunities for enquiry based learning and first-hand experiences.

Impact - this is what our children will have learnt - the knowledge and skills acquired in R.E.

Our RE curriculum impacts the pupils in the following ways:

  • Provides them with knowledge and understanding of religions and beliefs
  • The acquisition and understanding of religious vocabulary
  • The development of skills to interpret religious symbolism in a variety of forms
  • Pupils reflect on a range of questions of meaning and are able to offer their own thoughtful and informed insights into religious and secular worldviews
  • The acquisition of skills to explore ultimate questions of beliefs and values, in relation to a range of contemporary issues in an ever-changing society
