We have been working hard on understanding the place value of numbers to 20 this term. Now we are secure with numbers to 20, we have begun to start adding 1-digit numbers to 2-digit numbers. here are a few pictures from our fantastic addition morning, where we were adding to 20 on a number line and using a tens frame.
We hope you had a fantastic break over Christmas! We are ready and raring to go with Spring Term 1. Here is a curriculum map for this coming term - on here you will be able to find out all that we are learning about in Year 1 this term.
We have had SUCH a FANTASTIC week. We have absolutely loved being scientists for the week and learning all about space and the first ever moon landing. Did you know that Neil Armstrong was the FIRST MAN to step foot on the moon 50 years ago in 1969! This week, we have learnt about the Apollo 11 Mission, looked into how an astronaut goes to the toilet in space, made moon craters and launched rockets to name a few activities!
During this term, we have also been looking at our 5 senses. We know what 5 senses we have and which part of the body we use for each one. Here are a selection of photos from experiments we have conducted when learning about senses.
1. Yum or Yuk! - We tasted different foods and decided if we thought they were Yum or Yuk! We also looked at all the different areas of the tongue and we discussed which part of the tongue we might use to taste different types of food.
2. Nosey, nosey! - We used our sense of smell to decide what different types of smells we in each covered pot. We pulled some very funny faces when we smelt pot number 7 (VINEGAR).
3. What can you see and hear? - We went on a nature walk around our school. We took clipboards with us and drew pictures of what we could see or hear.
During our first Art block, we looked at Arcimboldo. He is an artist who painted portraits using fruit and vegetables. Inspired by his work, we used real fruit and vegetables to create our own Arcimboldo-inspired portrait!
This term, we have been looking at how to keep healthy. One of the things we were really interested in was where germs came from and how they spread. In our science sessions, we conducted an experiment. We tested 3 pieces of bread to find out which was dirtier - mud or our hands? We placed 1 slice of bread in the mud, passed another slice around our class (so 30 HANDS TOUCHED THE SLICE!) and then a final piece we kept clean. We left the bags for a week. Our findings were AMAZING! We found that our hands were DIRTIER than mud! From this, we have learnt how to effectively wash our hands.
To celebrate our new kitchen opening, we decided to become a class of mini chefs. We learnt a set of instructions on how to make a fruit kebab. We followed this set of instructions and made fruit kebabs. They were YUM YUM!
