PSHE
At Wolsey House Primary School, the teaching and learning of PSHE is central to supporting pupils’ personal development, wellbeing and understanding of themselves and others. Our PSHE curriculum is designed to equip children with the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to navigate life confidently, make informed choices and develop into respectful, responsible members of society. Through PSHE, pupils learn about relationships, health and wellbeing, emotions, safety, rights and responsibilities, and managing change, fostering both self-awareness and empathy for others: together we grow, achieve and thrive.
We follow the Jigsaw PSHE programme from Nursery to Year 6, which provides a progressive, spiral curriculum that builds knowledge and skills over time. Jigsaw is structured around six key themes: Being Me in My World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships, and Changing Me. These themes ensure that learning is age-appropriate, inclusive and revisited regularly, allowing pupils to deepen their understanding as they mature. The programme places a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, mental health and resilience, supporting children to recognise, express and manage their feelings in a healthy and respectful way.
PSHE at Wolsey House plays a vital role in promoting British Values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. A feature of our multi-cultural school that is celebrated throughout. Through discussion, reflection and collaborative activities, pupils are encouraged to express their opinions respectfully, understand the importance of rules and laws and appreciate diverse perspectives. The Celebrating Difference and Being Me in My World units, in particular, help pupils to develop a strong sense of identity, belonging and respect for others.
Our PSHE curriculum actively promotes equality and inclusion by developing pupils’ understanding of the protected characteristics as outlined in the Equality Act 2010. Children learn to value diversity, challenge stereotypes and recognise discrimination, helping them to develop empathy and respect for all. These themes are explored in an age-appropriate way across the school, ensuring pupils understand that everyone deserves to be treated fairly and with kindness, regardless of differences.
Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) is an integral part of our PSHE provision and is delivered through the Jigsaw programme in line with statutory guidance. RSHE is taught in a safe, supportive and inclusive environment, giving pupils accurate, age-appropriate information about physical and emotional changes, healthy relationships, personal boundaries, consent and online safety. Parents are informed about RSHE content and opportunities are provided to view materials and discuss learning, ensuring a strong partnership between home and school.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), PSHE is embedded within the prime area of Personal, Social and Emotional Development. Children learn to form positive relationships, manage emotions, develop independence and begin to understand the feelings and needs of others through play, stories and structured activities. These early experiences provide a strong foundation for the more explicit PSHE learning that takes place in Key Stages 1 and 2.
Across the school, PSHE is enriched through assemblies, themed days, visitors and whole-school initiatives that reinforce key messages and values. Links are made to safeguarding, British Values and the wider curriculum to ensure learning is meaningful and relevant. By the time pupils leave Wolsey House Primary School, they are equipped with the confidence, empathy and knowledge needed to maintain positive wellbeing, form healthy relationships and contribute positively to society.
