Wolsey House Vision and Values

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. They underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be confident, happy citizens. Wolsey House Primary School is at the heart of the community. The happiness and wellbeing of each child is central to the ethos of the school. Children are encouraged to cooperate with one another, respect diversity and treat others as equals.

We are a highly motivated and caring team. We are committed to providing opportunities for all our learners to develop into respectful, compassionate citizens, who contribute positively to the wellbeing of others and society. 

Our Vision

At Wolsey House Primary School we strive to ensure that every child achieves all-round success and their full potential.

2. Creating a welcoming atmosphere where everyone is included and valued and where differences are celebrated.
3. Creating a curriculum which inspires children to become confident and capable learners who are proud of their achievements.

Fundamental British Values Statement

 Promoting Fundamental British Values at Wolsey House Primary School

The Department for Education state that there is a need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy and these values were reiterated by the Prime Minister in 2014.

At Wolsey House Primary School, we understand core Fundamental British Values as:

• Democracy

• Rule of Law

• Individual Liberty

• Mutual respect and tolerance towards those of different faiths and cultures

   

  These values flow through the very fabric of our school ethos. Pupils are reminded of them both explicitly during key stage assemblies, displays and implicitly through carefully planned units of work in various subjects.

   

  At Wolsey House, values of tolerance and respect permeate all areas of school life. This promotes and engenders a climate within which pupils feel safe and secure and facilitates the fulfilment of their potential. The School Council plays an integral part in driving the school forward in its promotion of British Values.

   

At Wolsey House Primary School these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways:

Learning Environment

As children enter the school hall where they may eat their lunch, undertake a PE lesson or participate in an act of worship, they walk into a vibrant learning environment which has a colourful and meaningful display entitled ‘Celebrating Culture through Colour’. These are a series of display boards representing the major faiths- a constant reminder of the common values across all faiths which are celebrated at Wolsey House. This was an inclusive project and involved every child from the age of 3 to 11 in creating an individual piece of art work for this display.

During acts of worship, teachers and members of the senior leadership team remind children about managing their behaviour and the importance of school rules. Furthermore, they are taught to believe in themselves and pursue excellence through hard work, within a climate of high expectations and support.

Curriculum

At Wolsey House, our pupils benefit from a broad and balanced curriculum which includes units of work which are underpinned by British values and British culture:

In key Stage One pupils study stories from a range of cultures and look at the lives of inspirational British people. Pupils look at the Christian creation story as well as looking at symbols from other faiths. Also, children look at the features of England and the tradition of visiting the seaside.

In Key Stage Two, children study British history from many different eras as well as visiting various places of worship within the local area. Furthermore, pupils take part in poppy day celebrations. Also, pupils take part in the election process in order to elect school councillors.

Democracy

Democracy is embedded at the school.  Pupil Voice is valued and pupils are always listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and with concern to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard.  Pupils also have the opportunity to air their opinions and ideas through our School Council and regular questionnaires.  The elections of the School Council members and House Captains are based solely on pupil votes, reflecting our British electoral system and demonstrating democracy in action.

The Rule of Law

The importance of laws whether they are those that govern the class, the school or the country, are consistently reinforced.  Our school has a set of rules, which are deeply embedded in our work every day.  Each class also discusses and sets its own rules that are clearly understood by all and seen to be necessary to ensure that every class member is able to learn in a safe and ordered environment.  Our pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken.

Individual Liberty

Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment.  As a school we educate and provide boundaries for our pupils to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and an empowering education.  Our pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised how to exercise these safely; examples of this can be clearly seen in our e-safety and P.S.H.E. lessons.  Whether it is through choice of challenge; of how they record; of participation in our numerous extra- curricular activities; our pupils are given the freedom to make choices.

Mutual Respect

Respect is one of the core values of our school and promoting this is deeply embedded in all that we do at the school.  The pupils know and understand that it is expected and imperative that respect is shown to everyone, whatever differences we may have and to everything, however big or small.  The core value of Respect at Wolsey House Primary School underpins our work every day both in and out of the classroom.

Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths And Beliefs

Our core value of Respect ensures tolerance of those who have different faiths and beliefs.  Wolsey House Primary School enhances pupils’ understanding of different faiths and beliefs through religious education studies; P.S.H.E.; visits to other schools in different settings to participate in celebrations such as Diwali; visits to a range of places of worship; welcoming visitors from other schools which are not predominately white British and enjoying a depth of study during themed weeks.   During "One World Week" the whole school will focus on  and each class will specifically focus on one country from that continent.  Beliefs, traditions and customs will be studied in depth, with visitors being invited in to our school to enrich and extend understanding.  Through this our pupils gain an enhanced understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society. 

Our aim is for pupils to leave Wolsey House with many positive and universal values that will act as support structures and points of reference for their journeys ahead.
